Wheelbarrows and wellingtons were out in force when the much-anticipated new allotments were officially opened at Beggarwood Park.
Gardeners of all ages joined Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure Cllr Mark Ruffell at the opening ceremony.
A further twenty additional plots of land have been cultivated at the existing allotment site in Beggarwood Lane. The new sites were funded by £102,000 from the council’s capital programme in response to demand for allotments in the borough.
Basingstoke Allotment and Leisure Gardeners’ Association (BALGA) supported the project and they plan to celebrate later this year when the first crop is ready for harvesting.
Cllr Mark Ruffell said: “It’s a pleasure to officially open the new allotments at Beggarwood – there has been huge demand and I know that the new allotment holders will get much satisfaction from cultivating their own plot of land, as well as a good crop of fruit or vegetables! Gardening is a great way of exercising and staying healthy, making friends and getting involved in your community.”
