The Basingstoke Observer Meets...comedian Reginald D Hunter

9-2011-Wk40_Reginald_D_Hunter_PressA classically trained actor turned popular comic brings his unique blend of observational comedy to Basingstoke next week.

Self-confessed reluctant anglophile Reginald D Hunter will perform new show Sometimes Even The Devil Tells The Truth at The Anvil on October 12.

The US stand-up first hit the small screen in 2005 and is known to viewers for his regular TV appearances. In his distinctive Georgia accent Hunter said his career as a comedian was the result of being fired from a pantomime job in Birmingham. He said: “I got into it by accident. I was in a bar and got convinced to go try a comedy night there. I didn’t have any jokes, all I had was an attitude, disappointment and a bitter resentment.  Comedy doesn’t really need much more than that.”

Originally from Albany, the birthplace of Ray Charles, he was the youngest of nine children brought up in a strict religious household.

“It teaches you humility,” he said. “Or at least how to fake it as you essentially have 10 parents.”

The funny man has lived in the UK for 15 years and admits he enjoys poking fun at British stereotypes.

“I think the weather and the food is better in America, but I think the people are more interesting here,” he laughed.
