Grants available for borough youngsters

More than £100,000 has been made available to boost services for children and younger people in Basingstoke.

As part of a county-wide £1million scheme, councillor David Kirk agreed to release £122,663 in grants to projects in the town.

This includes £9,500 for Relate to help fund family counselling services and £18,790 to Basingstoke Voluntary Services to go towards a project to support young carers.

An additional £87,444 has been awarded in smaller grants to a wide range of voluntary organisations across the county.

Commenting on the grants Cllr David Kirk, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “Hampshire County Council is committed to ensuring children and young people have access to a wide range of therapeutic, educational and recreational services and activities. These grants have gone to a broad range of applicants, some of whom have applied for the first time.

“All the organisations receiving funding are working with, and for, children and young people to provide positive activities enabling them to stay healthy and safe and encouraging them to make a positive contribution to the wider community. District-based Children and Young People Groups recommend recipients for these grants to ensure our grant awards reflect community needs.”
