More than 100 allotments are set to open up for gardening enthusiasts in Hook.
Hook Allotments Association (HAA) has secured 5.5 acres of land to the north of the village along the Reading Road just past Hook Garden Centre, enough space for 120 full size plots.
The purchase will ease the waiting list of 140 people in the village. The association said only a few people had requested full size plots, and the waiting list should be cleared.
“A lot of time and effort has been expended over the last 18 months to bring this venture to fruition,” said HAA chairman Pete Comley.
“People have been seeking allotment sites in Hook for many years, including efforts by the parish council.
“With so much of the land surrounding the village earmarked for development the would-be allotmenteers thought their chances of securing a site were nil.”
In 2007 Hart District Council undertook an allotment provision review in Hook and concluded no suitable land was available.
Mr Comley, said: “We consider ourselves very fortunate to have found this land.”
The association will hold a meeting on Saturday, November 27 at Elizabeth Hall at 4pm to let those on the waiting list know how to apply. Interesting residents are invited to attend.
