The biggest change in broadcasting technology since the introduction of colour television is set to roll out across Basingstoke in February.
From this week the Hannington TV transmitter will have its analogue signal switched off, while the digital signal will be improved.
The change means people using an analogue system will be faced with blank screens, and homes watching Freeview will have to retune their TV’s.
The process will be finished by February 22.
Bill Taylor, the regional manager for Digital UK, which is leading the switchover, said the change will give homes currently in digital blackspots an improved picture quality, and more channels.
“For Basingstoke, digital switchover is very good news,” he said. “Because at the moment there are many thousands of homes in Basingstoke that can’t receive digital Freeview television, but now that will come on stream.
“By February 22, all the analogue channels will go off - that's D-Day really, and all channels will go to high-powered digital.”
He advised residents with analogue sets to buy a widely available digital box, as the change over does not require a new television.
Cable viewers using Sky or Virgin services do not need to do anything.
Bill said: “We know from experience that older people or disabled people can get anxious about the process, but there’s a lot of help and advice out there.”
On Thursday, February 9 and 22, Digital UK will set up an advice point at the Basingstoke Discovery Centre in Festival Place from 10am to 4pm where residents can seek help.
