Chineham school opened to charity

chineham-park-signChineham Park Primary School, which was shut down by the council in July this year will be converted into a charity shop and activity centre for children.

The school in Shakespeare Road, Popley, was closed down at the end of term due to poor pupil performance and falling attendance numbers.

The former school building, which was retained by the council, has been given to charity Peace of Mind Care who are rebranding the centre as The Popley Spotlight Centre.

Fire scare at Festival Place

Week34_fire_2Shoppers had to be evacuated from Festival Place after a fire alarm in Marks and Spencer triggered an emergency response on Tuesday August 17.

Fire alarms in the shopping centre ordered the evacuation of hundreds of afternoon shoppers and staff.

Four fire engines from Hampshire Fire and Rescue were called to Church Road at 5.39pm.

Three engines from Basingstoke, including a specialist equipment and ladder engine were called and the fourth was dispatched from Odium.

Golfing for charity

Week34_golf_challengeA Whitchurch man gave a cycling challenge a new twist by playing the first hole of nine, Open Championship golf courses, on the way.

Richard Belcher, who works for De la rue portals in Overton and is a retained firefighter, cycled the 811-mile route to raise money for charity.

The 40-year-old, father-of-two, started his challenge on July 19, completing his golfing odyssey by the end of the month.

Police tracing stalker

Crime-police-tapePolice investigating a number of suspicious incidents in Brighton Hill have released an e-fit of a man they would like to trace.

A 17-year-old girl has reported being followed by a man on several occasions in May and June in the Brighton Hill area.

The man, is described as being of Pakistani appearance, slightly shorter than 5ft 8ins with dark hair

A-level results praise

Week34_EXAMSThe council have praised students across Basingstoke for their A-level results.

The results which came on Thursday 19, saw many ecstatic students celebrating the end of months of waiting for their important grades.

Colleges across the town posted strong pass rates in A-level examinations. Queen Mary's College reported a 99 per cent pass rate with 45 per cent achieving a B or over.
