A second wave of strikes at Aldermaston’s nuclear weapons base have been put on hold after an eleventh-hour agreement on Tuesday.
Workers’ union Prospect, which represents 1,250 engineers and scientists at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), were threatening industrial action on Wednesday.
Prospect negotiator Bob King has been in talks with the nuclear factory bosses over staff pay.
Union members were up in arms over a two per-cent pay offer that the union claimed did not represent a fair deal for workers.
On November 23, over 500 workers left their posts during lunchtime to rally outside the base after failing to reach any agreement.
Prospect spokesman Graham Stuart said details of this week’s negotiations were still under wraps and details will not be released until its has been put to members later today (Thursday).
AWE spokeswoman Rachel Whybrow said: “The company and Prospect have held further constructive discussions aimed at seeking an agreed resolution to the 2010 pay review.
“As a result, the planned action for Wednesday December 1 has been suspended pending a meeting on this Thursday for Prospect to consult members on an improved offer.
“There has been no disruption to normal working practices as a result of the demonstration last week, and staff are at work as normal.”
