Basingstoke cricket club try out potato cricket

In a publicity stunt for Kettle Ridge Crisps, four modified dodgems led by Top Gear’s former Stig Ben Collins stopped at the club for a few unique overs.

The Dodgem Derby started in Over Wallop, near Stockbridge, before heading to Micheldever. Afterwards the eight drivers headed to the cricket club’s home at the Basingstoke Sports and Social Club in Fairfields Road.

With each of the dodgem teams taking it in turns to bat, 12 members from the cricket club’s girl juniors, second and first team took up fielding duty.

A special wicket made from crisp packets was installed and bowlers pitched potatoes at the batsmen, with points awarded for how far the potato travelled.

Sports club bar manager Marie Anderson said the event was an enjoyable spectacle for visitors.

She said: “It was wonderful and everybody enjoyed themselves. We had everybody out there and people thought it was a lot of fun.”

After leaving the ground the teams rounded off their 78-mile trip at Battersea Park in London.

Mr Collins, said: “The Dodgem Derby set out to put some extra wallop into Britain and we certainly managed that. The competition was tough at times but I’m thrilled that my team managed to beat the other competitors. I hope this is the first of many Dodgem Derbies.”
