Basingstoke doc tops poll

Chris_EdenPatients in Basingstoke are in a safe pair of hands after a surgeon was named as one of the countries top doctors.

In a survey by a national newspaper Consultant Urologist Christopher Eden was named one of the UK’s leading prostate cancer surgeons.

The survey asked 40 urologists one question: “If your own nearest and dearest required prostate cancer surgery, to whom would you refer them and why?”

Each surgeon nominated their top five, in which Mr Eden was listed.

The 48-year-old from Odiham has worked at BMI The Hampshire Clinic in Old Basing for 10 years where he has pioneered new techniques to treat prostate cancer.

He said he was flattered by the accolade, but hopes the award will get men talking openly about the disease.

He said: “Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men and yet it is still not discussed widely enough in mainstream circles.

“This recognition from my peers will hopefully highlight the successful work that both my colleagues and I are undertaking across the UK, and encourage more open discussion amongst men around screening and treatment.”

Around 36,000 men a year are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The survey praised the doctor for his groundbreaking work in keyhole surgery, using instruments inserted through narrow tubes rather than making bigger cuts.

Benefits include shorter hospital stays and recovery, less bleeding and pain and fewer complications.

“Prostate cancer surgery is a very complex specialty which not only requires great experience, but also a vast amount of skill to ensure the patient receives the best possible outcomes for their individual case,” said Philip Oehley, Executive Director of BMI The Hampshire Clinic.

“This is a fantastic honour for Mr Eden and very much deserved. He is a brilliant surgeon and highly respected.”
