Basingstoke firm raises cash for guide dog

Milo_dogs_for_blindA young guide dog is now being trained to help the blind thanks to a fundraising campaign in Basingstoke.

Staff at Southern Electric on Winchester Road raised more than £5,000 for Guide Dogs For The Blind.

Now the six-month-old Labrador pup, named Milo by the company after a staff vote, is being trained up to help a blind person to get around.

Members of the business energy sales team held a number of fundraising drives to collect their £5,500 donation.

Activities included a golf tournament, cake sale and a 50p donation to suggest one of three names for the pup.

Business energy sales manager, Terry Tippell, said: “It’s rewarding to see our dog being trained and to know that we’ve played a part in helping a blind person have a better quality of life.”

Guide Dogs For The Blind works with up to 1,200 puppies a year. The cost of breeding and training each dog is £5,000.

The charity’s district fundraiser, Michelle Parsons, said: “The guide dog service receives no government funding and depends entirely on public support, and so we would like to thank Southern Electric for their donation which will really help with Milo's training programme.”
