Voluntary organisations that help some of the borough’s most vulnerable residents will be hit by an average four per cent reduction in borough council cash.
Cabinet chiefs approved slashing support to charitable organisations, saving the authority more than £22,000.
The borough’s cabinet member for communities, sport, and leisure, Cllr Clive Sanders, said the funding changes had been worked out with the affected groups.
“It is clearly in our interests to keep a nice, coherent society moving forward to keep these organisations,” he said. “But in a time of economic constraint they can’t be immune to the economic pressures.”
Included in the grant reduction list is Basingstoke Voluntary Services, whose borough grant has fallen from £125,516 in 2011/12, to 122,755 from April this year.
The 47-year-old organisation offers help and support for 638 new and established voluntary groups across the borough, nearly double the number of groups helped in 2009/10.
The Basingstoke and Tadley branches of the Citizen Advice Bureau, Age Concern Basingstoke, Relate and Shopmobility Basingstoke have seen no reductions in borough financial support.
