Communities are being encouraged to go for gold and join in as London 2012 approaches by taking part in the Five Gold Rings community project.
The Basingstoke and Deane initiative is inviting individuals, groups or communities to use the theme of gold, the Olympics, or the Paralympics to inspire existing or new activities.
Many ideas have put forward, such things as planting gold flower beds on village greens, holding Olympic themed art exhibitions or sporting events at your local parent and toddler group.
Launched at the Gill Nethercott Community Centre in Whitchurch on Wednesday, February 10, the Five Gold Rings community project saw representatives from community groups, schools, colleges and local councils. The project’s presentation gave an opportunity to view the Olympic bid DVD, as well as speeches from Sporting Stars and London 2012 hopefuls, including 400m athlete and Olympian Robert Tobin.
The borough’s Cabinet Member for sport and Leisure Cllr Keight Chapman said
“It is important that as a borough we can all celebrate London 2010. The Olympics is not just about celebrating sporting success, is it about bringing communities together to mark what will be a historic event for this country”
“This project aims to get people thinking of other ways to mark the Olympics and to bring communities together for fun and exciting projects. I would like to encourage you all to think about what you or your community can do to be a part of the Five Gold Rings project.” To find out more information about Five Gold Rings visit www.basingstoke.gov.uk and click on the Going for Going tab or call 01256 844844 to request a booklet.
