Call for lights along Chineham pathway

Cllr_BiermannA borough councillor is calling for lights to be installed along a footpath in Chineham.

Martin Biermann wants lighting for the footpath cutting through woodland at north Binfields through to Chineham Shopping Centre.

Gary Fox, 49, a cab driver from Lillymill Chine, labelled the path a “muggers paradise” after dark and said: “It is ridiculous that there are no lights along the path.

“When it gets dark, you can't see your hand in front of your face. It is pitch black and you can't walk through on your own.”

In 2010 Hampshire County Council finished tarmacking the shingle footpath saving residents a three-mile drive on the A33 to the shopping centre with a 400-metre woodland shortcut.

But for Cllr Biermann, the lack of lights prevents residents from using in the dark. He said: “The pathway is useless after dark. The county council have obviously set aside a lot of money refurbishing the path - but its all to waste if you can only use it half of the time.”
