Camrose misery continues

CamroseThe misery goes on for outdoor sports as the big freeze saw the Dragon’s Saturday trip away to table toppers Braintree Town wiped out.

In reality there was no chance of the game going ahead as the entire Conference South fixture list were cancelled.

On November 14 the weather relented for Town to thrash neighbours Hartley Wintney 1 -7 away in the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Strikers David Pratt and Greg Draper, both returning from injury, scored twice. Gary Frewen with Jahson Downes all scored once.

Town were out of sight and looking for an eighth goal when they pushed too far forward and allowed the home side a consolation goal.

This victory sets Basingstoke up with a quarter final home tie against Farnborough in the New Year.

The Dragons secured a late 1-0 win at the Camrose in late August and the two sides will meet again in the League between Christmas and New Year at Cherrywood Road.

But match fitness will be a concern. The dragons have played just 14 league games in the last four months.

For the Dragons it is not only the first team who have not played in the league since November 15 - the Academy, who have played only three fixtures since October 25.

Weather permitting, next up Basingstoke take on Maidenhead United at home on Boxing Day.

Town bosses will be hopeful of a bumper crowd as people look to get their football fix after the recent spate of cancellations.

If Town are to get play-off ambitions on track they must now put together a decent run of results.

But the odds are not stacked in the Dragon favour. Basingstoke last beat Maidenhead away in March 2009.

The Magpies have won three and drawn two of the last five encounters at the Camrose. Town’s last victory at home came in 2004.

The sides will square up again on New Years Day at York Road and The Dragons will be looking to get six points out of the double header.

In between ‘Stoke visit Farnborough on December 28. The visitors will be looking for the double over their North Hampshire rivals with the hosts desperate to avoid the embarrassment and to square things up with a victory each.

The Christmas period will be completed on January 3 at home against Weston –super- Mare.

The Seagulls are having a decent season, currently two points off the play-off places. They previously beat the Dragons winning 1-0 in August and Town will be seeking revenge.

The Dragons need a minimum of eight points from the Christmas and New Year games to lift them into the top half of the table and with 28 fixtures remaining there is still a lot of drama to unfold in the Conference South this season.
