Cash boost for science garden

ScienceGardenA Basingstoke science garden has received a cash boost from AWE.

Staff at the Aldermaston base donated £1,000 to the new facility at Queen Mary’s College, which opened last month.

The garden is an extension of the existing science centre and gives budding scientists the chance to carry out experiments not available on the curriculum.

The area has six ponds in the shape of a beetle, a wildlife area for bugs and 8ft-high pan pipes made from guttering.

Dr Eddie Grimble, head of science at the college, said: “We are very grateful for the support from AWE. The money that has been donated has enabled us to add to the range of activities that classes have access to, as part of their visit.”

At the opening on June 18, pupils from Fairfield Primary School built a wildlife wall to encourage biodiversity in the garden. They also tried out pond dipping and a rocket experiment using coca-cola and sweets.

Since opening its doors in 1998, more than 5,000 students have used the QMC centre each year.
