A rugby squad that took on the Three Peaks Challenge successfully completed their mission but just shy of their 24 hour target.
The Basingstoke Cavaliers tackled the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales over the weekend to raise money for Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.
The 11-stong team were on target to hit the 24 hour deadline, but after getting lost on Scafell Pike, fell behind.
Speaking of the experience, Kiel Hillier, said: “I am absolutely corn-crackered after it, my legs are totally shot. It was the most tiring experience of my life and it puts so much punishment on your body.
“Every step was pure agony, but we all got through it. Overall it was a great experience.
“Throughout the challenge we kept it each other motivated at every step of the way. However it was it was the support staff who really kept it going. They did a fantastic job driving and giving us food and sandwiches when we came down the mountain.”
The team have so far posted £1,600 towards the hospital's cancer unit to help them buy radiological facilities.
The third team will be hitting the rugby pitch this weekend. Mr Hillier said: “The three peaks challenge has overall helped our fitness a lot, but I expect that a few will only want to play a half this weekend.
