Charity offering free school trips

Week36_Schools_CinemaA charity is calling for Basingstoke teachers to sign up for National Schools Film Week.

The week, which runs from October 14 to 22, gives teachers the chance to take school children aged four to 19 to see a film at Basingstoke's Odeon and Vue cinemas for free.

The charity, Film Education, says that the week intends to promote film as an educational tool and is providing talks to schools to help students understand the films they have seen.

Nick Walker, Director of National Schools Film Week, said: “We hope that teachers and students feel engaged in the Festival and realise that attending a NSFW screening is far more than a nice trip to the cinema.

"We want the week empower teachers by giving them the opportunity to choose which films they feel tie in with school topics at their local cinema and encourage students to explore new worlds by seeing films they wouldn’t ordinarily choose.”

Sheila Pape, Headteacher at South View Junior School, said: “Up to 60 per cent of our children have special needs. The kids here saw this as a real treat and it gave them a chance to go out into society and enjoy themselves.”

The charity is supported by Oscar winning film maker, Danny Boyle, he said: “I’m very proud to be a patron of Film Education and National Schools Film Week because I think it’s important that people go to the cinema as soon as possible in their lives, and then keep going.”
