Multi-coloured wigs and wacky hairdos went to people’s heads during a crazy charity fundraiser.
Up to 28 organisations across Basingstoke took part in St Michael’s Hospice's annual Mad Hair Day on Friday.
The hospice challenged people to sport a jazzy hairstyle and raise cash for the centre.
But one dedicated woman went a step further and shaved off all her hair in front of cheering hospice residents.
St Michael's Hospice bereavement services administrator Debs Wallace, 46, from Limes Park, had raised more than £200 when the Observer went to press.
She said: “I actually quite like my hair like this. But it felt quite strange when it was shaved off.
“I did it just so I could raise as much money as possible for the hospice. I normally get my hair trimmed every six weeks or so – but never in my life have I done something like this.”
She received her trim under the steady clippers of the hospice's resident hairdresser, Lesley McKenzie.
Lesley said in her five years cutting hair this was the first time she had completely shaved a woman's head.
She added: “It feels totally against the grain as a hair dresser. It does feel quite wrong.
“But I am proud of what Debs has done. I think it really suits her, though, and I reckon she looks better.”
The hospice fundraising team has set a target of £6,000 from the drive.
Across the borough, Basingstoke College of Technology and schools Winkelbury Infants, St Mary's Junior, Park View Junior, Cliddesden Primary and South View Junior all signed up for the event.
Community fundraising manager, Helena Maskell, said the event is important for residents' morale.
She said: “It is more that just fun, it is saying to our patients that it doesn't matter whether you have hair or not and that there is no stigma to it.”
The hospice on Aldermaston Road will use the cash to fund its services.
