South Ham’s children were able to showcase their artistic flair through a new charity art initiative.
The Sovereign Kingfisher charity organisation collaborated with the South Ham's budding future Picassos to create a wall mosaic for display at Kingfisher Community House, in Burton Close.
The mosaic, which depicts a colourful kingfisher, was designed by Basingstoke artist Rachel Silver and put together by children and parents during the May half-term holidays.
The mosaic now takes pride of place on an outside wall of the house following the official unveiling on Friday, July 23.
The day saw more than 50 guests join in the celebrations with Sovereign Kingfisher’s Chairman, Chris Holland, and Councillor Karen Cherrett, Basingstoke and Deane’s cabinet member for Education, Performance and Partnerships.
Chris Holland, Sovereign Kingfisher’s chairman, said, “I joined the Board of Kingfisher so that I could give something back to the community and it is fantastic that these youngsters have been able to do the same through art. The mosaic is something they should be proud of and I am sure it will give local residents a lot of pleasure.”
The Kingfisher community house opened in 2005 as a facility for use by local residents
Currently Basingstoke police, The Two Saints Housing Association and various support groups make use of the house to meet with residents.
Sovereign Kingfisher also use the property in partnership with the other groups to put on regular community events such as summer BBQs, Halloween events and Christmas celebrations.
On top of the mosaic, Sovereign Kingfisher donated an awning for the house and four police mountain bikes.
