Basingstoke council has said it is disappointment that Fujitsu has decided to pull out of the town.
Japanese IT company Fujitsu Services UK has announced it is moving its offices to Bracknell in a bid to drive down costs.
The company, which has had offices in the town for 25 years, will close its plant in Jays Close on Viables industrial estate.
The 260 employees will now face a 30-mile commute to Bracknell.
Plans for the move were announced at a meeting with staff on Monday October 4.
Head of media relations Graham Goulden said: “It was a purely economical measure.
“It is a tough market at the moment to remain competitive in and we needed to ensure that our cost base is as low as possible.
“Lots of IT companies are finding it difficult during the recession and are finding ways they can keep their costs down.”
Mr Goulden confirmed that the move will take place during December.
“We are hoping that everybody will be able to transfer over to the new offices,” he added.
However, he said that the commute was not far enough for the company to offer travel concessions to employees.
Fujitsu said no jobs will be scrapped during the transfer.
A source working for Fujitsu, who did not want to be named, said employees are not happy with the decision.
Leader of Basingstoke Borough Council Andrew Finney said the council was told of the move on Friday last week.
He said: “One word seems to sum up the decision from Fujitsu, and that is ‘disappointment’.
“It is disappointing to lose a business that has been in Basingstoke for a long time and it is disappointing that they chose Bracknell over Basingstoke.
“It is the way business works and we have seen it before, and it shows that we need to attract new business and keep them.
Cllr Finney said he believed Fujitsu’s decision was not a sign of things to come and new developments in Basing View should ensure business will come to the town.
He said: “We have a skilled workforce and Basingstoke remains an attractive place to do business in.”
