Firefighters are World Champs

Week36_Fire_Service_-2Two crack firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue were crowned World Champions at the World Rescue Challenge.

The trauma team and vehicle extraction team travelled to Cork, Ireland, from Thursday, September 2 to Sunday, September 5 to compete against firefighters from the UK and around the world.

The fire service trauma team returned as World Champions and the vehicle extraction team bought home the silver in their competitions.

Over 80 top firefighters from the UK and teams from Germany, Spain, France and the USA competed in the events.

The trauma challenge saw firefighter Jim Hutchen and crew manager Kerry Charlton have 15 minutes to stabilise and treat casulties in a simulated road traffic accident.

The five-man vehicle extraction team had 20 minutes to rescue people from a simulated to-car collision requiring them to remove the roof and cut away doors.

Watch Manager Steve Barrow, manager of the Hampshire extrication and trauma team said: “What we had to do was essentially a mock up of what happens on the M3 for real.

Week36_Fire_Service_-3“The standard was very high at the competition, the trauma event had the 30 best teams in the world. I watched Jim and Kerry and they looked world class.

“I am absolutely delighted with the result for Jim and Kerry, their preparation and hard work in their own time leading up to the event is to be highly commended.”

Hampshire Fire and Rescue said what trauma and vehicle extraction make up about 65 per cent of the teams day-to-day work, last year there were 1,500 road traffic accidents in the county.
