A Basingstoke girl who had given up her dream of being on the radio has been given a once in a life time opportunity.
Amy-Lauren Watson, 16, from Brighton Hill, wanted to study radio at Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke, but suffered disappointment when the module was cut this year.
Ms Watson was able to realise her dream when a new online radio station took her on.
Bizz Radio, which is due to launch on later this month gave her the opportunity to study with them and gain a valuable insight into a working radio station.
Ms Watson said: “I had started to give up on the whole idea of a career in radio. When I heard that a new station was launching I got my hopes up and sent them a email out of the blue.
“I was a bit nervous sending off the email asking for some experience, but they got back to me within the hour and said they would help me learn everything do with radio. It felt like it was too good to be true.
“Now I am really excited and can't wait to get started."
Ms Watson is due to start her AS levels at QMC on Thursday to study Media, Spanish, English and Economics.
She received three A's and eight B's at GCSE and wanted to study media to with hopes of getting into radio.
Bizz Radio Director Phil Wickham, said: “When we received the email from Amy-Lauren, we realised straight away that she had a passion for radio. For us this is amazing, for people to have passion is far more important than being in it for the glamour."
Bizz Radio said that they intend to mentor Amy-Lauren in all aspects of a working radio station, teaching her the technical aspects, dealing with advertisers, broadcasting and interviewing.
Mr Wickham said: “I think she got a lot more than she expected, we intend to mentor her first hand in everything to with radio, and she will get an amazing head start for her career.”
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Keith Chapman, who met the pair, said: “It's a great idea that a business is giving a young person a helping hand in seeking out her dream career and providing the opportunity for her to follow her ambition.”
