Giant Lego project to start at Milestones Museum

Final plans to transform a historic Basingstoke landmark into Lego have been unveiled by the county council.

Work is set to begin to create a scaled model of Basing House from 150,000 plastic bricks.

From February 21, the team that helped TV’s James May build a life-size Lego Home for his BBC 2 show Toy Stories, will start work on recreating the Old Basing Tudor castle.

The 1/40 scale model will be built in four parts and includes the Norman Castle and its Tudor era extension, the Great Barn house and gardens, and the walled grounds. It is expected to be complete by March 31.

The creation will be built at Basingstoke’s Milestones Museum in the Leisure Park off Churchill Way West, and will be displayed throughout the Easter holidays before moving to its permanent home in Basing House.

The build will be coordinated by Duncan Titchmarch, the UK’s only certified Lego builder.

Ed Diment, director of Petersfield-based firm Bright Bricks Ltd, the company behind the scheme, said he was excited about the project.

“The Basing House model will be a unique challenge. We will be building a model of how the house looked in its heyday during the Tudor period,” he said.

“The Milestones Museum is a great venue for the project and, of course, is local to the actual Basing House location, an important archaeological site for Hampshire.”
