DSC_0487BASINGSTOKE council bosses will meet next week to consider a raft of cost-saving measures.

A full cabinet meeting to discuss the measures takes place at the council offices on Thursday next week.

Bosses will be reviewing fees and charges in the borough and plans to share waste collections with Hart District Council.

Borough council leader Andrew Finney urged residents to get involved during the decision process.

He said: “We would encourage residents to let us know what they think of what we are doing.

“We do review how things are run and we want residents who are concerned to talk to us.”

The first item on the agenda will be to decide whether Basingstoke and Deane should work with Hart on the management and collection of waste.

The aim is to save cash for both councils.

Hart manages waste in Hartley Wintney, Hook, Odiham and Fleet.

The waste management teams of the two councils are currently carrying out similar jobs, with their own collections and waste management policies.

Cllr Finney said: “Currently, our resident's have told us, and we believe, that the existing system in place offers a good standard of service.

“However, by merging the two there is the potential for the borough to make considerable savings.”

The cabinet leader admitted , however, that management jobs would be axed as a result of a merger.

Employing one set of management staff could mean a short-term saving of between £187,700 and £267,900.

The cabinet will also consider ramping up car parking charges across the borough.

Proposals include adding a new tariff band of 50p for a half hour stay at all car parks.

Currently, motorists can only pay for a full hour.

All tariffs are expected to be increased by 10p, except for stays longer than four hours, where charges will remain the same.

Other measures, such as charging for removing bulky household waste and pre-planning advice for building, will also be looked at.

Cllr Finney said: “We need to strike a balance between what residents choose to pay for and what they have no choice in paying, such as council tax.

“Council car parks, for example, do not appear by magic and we have to maintain and police them.

“You do not get anything for nothing, things have to be paid for some where.”
