Glut of guides is needed at Vyne historic property

The National Trust is calling for a host of new volunteers to help run a historic house.

The_VyneThe Vyne in Sherborne St John is looking to recruit more than 100 extra volunteers to cope with the surge in interest anticipated  this year.

In 2010 more than 100,000 visitors passed through the 16th century estate - an increase in 20 per cent from 2008.

House steward Helen Sanderson said: “We need over 100 room guides alone, now that we have extended The Vyne’s opening hours to deal with demand.”

The house is looking to snap up volunteers who want to be room guides and help show visitors around the property, giving talks about the rooms’ history.

TheVyne3Katy White, a 19-year-old volunteer house steward, said: “I became a volunteer because I want to work in the field of museum conservation.

“This is a great way for me to get some practical work experience under my belt and at the same time, I feel I’m doing something really useful by caring for this piece of our heritage.”

Other roles available include butterfly conservationists, garden volunteers and a craft activities team.

Volunteers would be expected to do at least three and half hours a week.

But Vyne spokesperson Joanna Cross said volunteers hours would be flexible.

The Vyne’s next recruitment days are on Thursday, January 13, and Saturday, January 15. For more information, call Helen Sanderson on 01256 883858.
