A massive three-day debate is currently underway to decide where new homes should be built across Basingstoke.
Housing chiefs are met on Tuesday, Wednesday, and finish on Thursday, to decide where 9,500 homes will go as the council prepares to submit its Local Development Framework (LDF) for Government approval.
The housing masterplan is set over 16 years and could see nearly 4,000 homes put on previously undeveloped land.
This includes 100 homes on Swing Swang Lane, 480 on Razors Farm, 450 north of Popley Fields, 900 east of Basingstoke, 150 on Redlands, and up to 1,050 homes at Basingstoke Golf Club.
The move follows the Government's decision to scrap the South East Plan, which forced the council build at least 945 homes each year.
Council meetings earlier this year saw councillors radically cut the number of homes Basingstoke should build to 594 following a large scale consultation with residents who overwhelmingly supported a lower figure.
The borough council’s housing boss, Councillor Rob Golding, said they will plan to stick with the 594 figure instead of pushing for the target lower to 400.
However the council need to win over a Government planning inspector who will examine if 594 is sufficient for the borough, and if there is enough land to available.
Cllr Golding said: “The work has been done and in light of all that I do not think it will be sufficient to reduce it any further - 594 is the right number going forward. This is about the whole way that our borough develops over the next 16 years and will affect all of us who live in Basingstoke and Deane.
“Everyone has an interest in making sure that we build enough houses for people who want to continue to live here and people also have strong views on where houses should be built where they live.”
The borough already has 5,575 homes ready to build on sites that already have planning permission.
