Man dies after house fire

A man has died after a house fire in Basingstoke last week.

The incident occurred at around 10.15pm on Friday, May 7 when emergency service crews were alerted to a blaze in a three bedroom semi-detached property in St Patrick’s Road, South Ham.

A total of 14 firefighters descended on the scene from Basingstoke and Overton and found the fire on the ground floor living room – while the reminder of the property was heavily smoke logged. A man, believed to be in his 60’s, died as a result of the incident.

Group Manager Jerry Leonard said: “The initial attending crews were quickly made aware that two persons were trapped within the property. Rescues were very quickly carried out due to the firefighters very determined efforts and the occupants were handed over the the care of South Central Ambulance Service.

“The firefighters hard work ensured that damage was limited to one room and prevented further damage. This was a preventable tragedy and we will continue to work with our local communities to make life safer wherever possible and prevent further incidents of this kind.”

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice to residents on the dangers of household smoke; including owning working smoke alarms and ensuring cigarette butts are completely extinguished.
