Maria backs silent calls campaign

Town MP Maria Miller has welcomed proposals to prevent residents being harassed by repeated silent calls.

Watchdog Ofcom has received thousands of complaints from silent calls, where residents answer their phone but receive no response, and has been labelled as a distressing form of marketing. But under new rules residents will not be repeatedly bothered by silent calls.

Maria said: “The new announcement by Ofcom is a step in the right direction. Silent calls can appear intimidating and cause real anxiety even though they are usually simply marketing companies trying to make a sale. I welcome Ofcom’s new proposal to prevent silent calls more than once in 24 hours. This means that consumers currently worst affected would no longer receive repeat silent calls over the course of a day.”
