MP campaign for Old Basing Post Office

Week36_Maria_Miller_Post_OfficeBasingstoke MP Maria Miller is calling for a mobile Post Office in Old Basing.

Residents only have limited access to Post Office services due to the closure of the Belle Vue Road sub post office over two years ago.

Ms Miller said: “A Post Office is still a necessity in any residential area. For Old Basing residents the removal of the number 12 bus route means that now the option of travelling to the Post Office in Chineham Shopping Centre is more difficult.

“I hope that the Post Office will respond positively to the idea having a mobile Post Office in Old Basing because of the current problems residents are facing in accessing Post Office services. These are problems which have been compounded by the loss of the local bus route which links Old Basing to Chineham, the next nearest Post Office site.”

She said that the service is more important than ever for older and less mobile residents who need the post office for stamps, cash and tax.

Dummer and North Warnborough are currently served by a mobile post office and Ms Miller wants a similar system in Old Basing.

The Dummer Post Office has no permanent office, but sets up every Friday in the village hall.

Ms Miller said: “All they need is a place to be and an internet connection and they are able to provide most of the services a usual post office can.”

Since the closure of the Old Basing Post Office, there has been a petition which received over 400 signatures, however, currently residents have to travel to Chineham or London Road to get Post Office services.

Ms Miller said: “I think that the demand for Post Office services in Old Basing will be the same and probably considerably more that Dummer.

“There is a clear need for a service in Old Basing and I am trying to keep the pressure up and get the Post Office to change their minds and realise that they made a mistake closing the office.”
