MP launches cheque campaign

Week34-Save_the_ChequeBasingstoke MP Maria Miller has started a petition to stop the permanent withdrawal of cheques in 2018.

Her campaign was launched at Basingstoke's Shopmobility on Church Street on Friday August 20.

The Save the Chequebook campaign is supported by Basingstoke's Over 55's group and Shopmobility.

Ms Miller said: “Currently I feel that the older generation are not being thought of enough in the process to phase out cheques as not everyone has easy access to the internet. The cheque is also relied upon by disabled people who are unable to use cash point machines or have difficulty getting to the bank.

“Cheques are still being extensively used and if the Payments Council want to abolish them then they will have to come up with new suitable methods for payment methods such as payments to individuals, traders and charities.”

The petition is a reaction to the Payments Council's announcement in December 2009 that cheques will be pulled entirely from use by October 31 2018.

Ms Miller's petition closes on September 30 when it will be forwarded to the payments council.

The petition is available to sign at Shopmobility, Basingstoke Voluntary Service, based at The Orchard or downloaded from the web at www.mariamiller.co.uk.
