Basingstoke MP Maria Miller visited Jobcentre Plus in Winchester Road on Friday last week to discuss unemployment in the town.
She met the Hampshire and Isle of Wight district manager to discuss government initiatives for tackling the problem.
Unemployment in Basingstoke fell last month for the first time since November last year.
According to the Office of National Statistics, there are now 2,426 claiming jobseeker’s allowance.
Maria, who is minister for the disabled, said: “As the local MP, it is clearly important for me to get regular updates on the employment situation in the town.
“It was very useful to hear at first hand from disabled people about the particular difficulties they face in finding employment and how the new Work Choice Programme and the Access to Work Programme can help them.
“I was told about some Basingstoke employers who set a really good example in their positive attitude towards employing disabled people.
“I would encourage all our local employers to think about what more they could do to recruit people with disabilities, as research shows that disabled people make great employees.”
