Mystery blaze at historic pub

A 500-year-old pub in North Warnborough has been ravaged by a mystery blaze.

The historic Swan Inn on Hook Road had closed in June due to lack of custom and was empty when the fire broke out at just after 11pm on Wednesday, September 22.

Firefighters turned out from Hartley-Wintney, Odiham, and Basingstoke.

swaninnThe blaze, which was finally put out at about 3am the following day, left the pub’s interior and roof severely damaged.

Landlady Jo Fairhurst and her husband, Barry, had only moved out on September 14.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and police are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Constable Andy Grieve of Aldershot CID said: “Although the fire started late in the evening, there may have been motorists on the road who saw something out of the ordinary.

“If you were in the area on Wednesday and saw anything suspicious, please contact us as soon as possible.”

The grade II-listed inn, near Basingstoke Canal, is one of the oldest village pubs in Basingstoke and Deane, dating from the 16th century. It is owned by the Wellington Pub Company

Peter Fountain of Odiham Town Management Group, said: “The pub obtained its license to serve refreshments to the men building the canal, back in 1789.

“It’s a tragic end to the life of a pub, particularly as we’re losing them left right and centre.

“Pubs are closing down due to the economic times, so it’s very sad to lose one to fire.”

Anyone with information about the blaze should call Det Con Grieve at Aldershot police station on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
