New future for town centre building

10-2011-Wk41_Chute_HouseA council-owned building is being brought back into use after lying empty for more than six-months.

Council bosses are set to grant a five-year lease on former University of Winchester building Chute House on Church Road to Basingstoke Multicultural Forum.

The move has been heralded as a boost to the community by giving a popular town charity a central base.

The former university tenants left the site in July, ending eight years of use.

The grade II-listed building had netted the council £12,500 a year in rent, but is now costing  £15,000 in maintenance costs.

The Basingstoke Multicultural Forum, which was set up in 2004, aims to promote better understanding between religions and cultures in the borough, and encourages cross-cultural events.

Council bosses agreed to lease the house to the Multicultural Forum for £3,000 per year with with the forum footing the maintenance and upkeep costs.

Borough culture chief Councillor Clive Sanders said: "It is a building that fits with a community use.

"The Multicultural Forum are one of the best organisations in the borough. I think this marks a milestone in their development.”

The building is currently used for free by Basingstoke Community Transport and the girl guides. They will remain on the site when the forum moves in.

Forum chief executive Radhia Tarafder said the group hoped to move in by the start of 2012.

She said: "We are really excited about it. It is a big move for us and we have every confidence that it will be great.

"Our members and community are looking forward to having a base which brings everyone together and to make Basingstoke a little more cohesive."
