New scanner for NHS hospital

Hospital_ScannerIn a bid to improve services Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital will take delivery of a new multi-million pound MRI scanner.

Work to get the new magnet up and running will take place throughout January and it will go live early next month.

The Siemens Aera 1.5 Tesla Magnet will replace the current static scanner.

Dr Delia Peppercorn, lead clinician for radiology, said: “The new magnet will not only provide better imaging for our patients but also provide new applications which will further improve our diagnostic accuracy.”

Dr Peppercorn said that current patient waiting times are not anticipated to increase during the installation.

Since December the hospital has been running two mobile scanners to fill in during the installation works.

MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce a detailed image of inside of the body.

The scanner consists of a large tube containing a series of powerful magnets.
