Night Stroll for Charity

Week36_Midnight_walkHundreds of women turned out in the dead of night on Saturday, September 4, in aid of charity.

The Women's Midnight Walk attracted 900 women raising money for St. Michael's Hospice.

The women raised a massive £90,000 for the hospice, with an extra £100,000 coming in as Gift Aid on the donations.

The walk started out at Festival Place at midnight and the first walkers made it round the 11-mile circuit by 2.30am, with the last remaining few clocking in by 4.30am.

“Midnight Walk was a huge success and we were delighted with the support from local ladies and a few men trying to pass as ladies. £90,000 really is a fantastic amount to raise from a single event and everyone had such fun, we have had some great feedback from the walkers with many people already wanting to take part in the event next year,” said hospice marketing and communications manager, Lucinda Stubbs.

Week36_Midnight_walk2“The money raised is the equivalent of six months running costs for our Hospice at Home service which is a vital service supporting patients in their choice to be cared for and remain at home until their last days.”

The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Keith Chapman, started off the night wishing the hundreds of walkers luck before they started the challenge.

He said: “It was a fantastic atmosphere. My wife and my daughter were taking part and they managed it in three and half hours.

“I had the easy job, I wished the walkers all the best and then went back home and straight to bed, though I did feel guilty sleeping while my wife and daughter were walking so it took me a while before I fell asleep.

“It's a great even that helps the hospice and so I think it's amazing that all these women turned out to support a good and worthwhile cause.”

Helen Grindrod, from Basingstoke, said: “I feel like I have a hangover , I enjoyed it though and was really impressed how well organised it all was. The marshals did a fantastic job spurring us on and giving us smile to keep us going.Well done to everyone.

Last years event raised £125,000 for the hospice, next years walk will take place of Saturday, September 3. Registration will be open by Monday next week.
