Oakridge youngsters raise cash for homeless

Oakridge_youngstersYoungsters from a Basingstoke school handed over cash to help homeless people in the borough.

Students from Oakridge Junior School in Oakridge Road raised £127 for Mayplace House hostel in May Place.

The hostel provides rooms and support for 20 homeless people.

Hostel manager Ingrid Wright said: “What the children here at Oakridge have done is amazing.

“The school has been very supportive and the children have been really engaged with topics around homelessness and the work that we do.”

The money will help the hostel buy gym equipment to promote its healthy living awareness drive.

The school has pledged to continue helping the hostel, run by the YOU Trust, throughout the year.

The school’s deputy head, Katy Thompson, said: “We wanted to do something a bit different to raise awareness of homelessness.

“We were really pleased we were able to donate the money to such a worthy local cause.”
