Overton thatch fire

ThatchfireUp to 40 fire fighters tackled a blaze in Overton on Sunday, December 12.

At 4pm crews raced to Kingsclere Road after a thatched roof caught fire.

Crews from six stations spent two-and-a-half hours getting the fire under control.

When firefighters arrived, 15 per cent of the thatched roof was alight. The crews worked to stop the fire spreading from the house.

Police closed the road as the two story property was alight. By 7.30pm, 40 fire fighters in breathing gear with water jets and hoses had brought the blaze under control.

Up to 40 per cent of the roof was damaged and crews checked the thatch with a thermal imaging camera to ensure no further outbreaks.

Group Manager, Dave Norgate said: “This type of incident is always very difficult to deal with due to the make up of the thatch roof.

“The crews did a fantastic job in making a break in the thatch to stop the fire spreading to involve the whole of the property.

“Had it not been for their swift actions and hard work in there is no doubt that the damage would have been much more significant.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
