Get fit while helping charity

Winklebury-based cystic fibrosis charity Anna’s Challenges is holding a fundraising exercise session.

The group, headed by mum Rachel Marke, aims to raise funds for the cystic fibrosis unit at Basingstoke Hospital.

Rachel’s daughter Anna, three, suffers from the disease.

The ‘exercise-a-thon’ on May 20 offers three hours of exercise, including Zumba, Body Pump and Bollywood-inspired fitness craze Just Jhoom.

Watership Down trek with author

Macmillan Cancer Support is calling for walkers to take part in a spectacular hike across north Hampshire.

Celebrated author Richard Adams will take part in the 7.5 mile and 12.5 mile circular trek across the landscape that inspired his bestselling classic Watership Down.

The walk on Sunday starts from Ecchinswell.

Woolly wheeze at train station

Yarn-Bomb-2Commuters at Basingstoke train station were given a colourful surprise when they found area had been covered with knitted creations.

Last week, benches, railings, and statues around the station were targeted by the street art craze of yarn bombing.

The art-form involves covering  everyday objects with hand-knitted pieces.

The latest addition to the newly-revamped train station sparked mixed reactions.

Battle of bands

Basingstoke five-piece band FlashFires will battle in out on stage for a headline slot in a county festival in July.

The band will go head-to-head against three other Hampshire acts at Ferneham Hall, Fareham, on Saturday in the Battle of the Bands 2012 competition, run by Hampshire Music Service.

The winning band will headline Hampshire Welcomes the World – The Big Event at Staunton Country Park on July 8.

Jazz dates

Details of Odiham’s popular Jazz Weekend have been announced.

The two-day festival will be held at Odiham Chalk Pit on the August 25 and 26 bank holiday weekend.

The line-up includes Robert May’s Old Boy Band and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra.

The weekend is run by the Rotary Club of Odiham and Hook and proceeds will be donated to Odiham Cottage Hospital Charitable Trust and the Neurofibromatosis Association.
