Parking petition doing the rounds

A resident fears someone will have to die before parking issues are resolved in his community.

Commuters are parking along Doswell Way and the surrounding streets to avoid excessive fees at the station and this is putting pressure on nearby homeowners.

A petition has been set up by Labour group leader Laura James, contesting a Norden seat at next month’s borough elections, to lobby the council and get residents’ views heard.

Arthur Williams, from Deanes Close told the Observer why he signed the petition.

Mr Williams requires an oxygen tank and fears ambulances will not be able to reach his home in an emergency.

“I would hate to think what would happen if a fire engine ever had to come here, so I signed the petition,” he said. “I have no problem with commuters, I spent all my working life travelling all over the country and if I had to pay for every car park, I would have been broke.”

One solution put forward would be residents’ parking permits but it would be an unnecessary cost for the community, he believes.

“I know some people here are opposed to parking permits and, to be perfectly honest, we don’t need them. I don’t want to have to burden the residents with buying a permit every year.

“I suppose the ideal solution is to give the commuters a free car park but no council is ever going to do that, are they? There has got to be a system that can stop commuters from parking there, possibly with a maximum of two hours for non residents parking.”

Laura James, leading the petition, said: “We have seen a 46per cent increase in charges at the Vyne Meadow car park, making it even more costly for commuters and forcing them to park in the surrounding seats.

“It is up to the Conservative administration to consult with the residents and get something sorted."
