Police hunt for serial rapist 27 years after the attacks

Wk15-13Police are appealing for help in their hunt for a serial rapist – nearly 27 years after his last attack.

Breakthroughs in DNA technology have enabled Hampshire detectives to link rapes in Whitchurch and Dummer to one in Winchester.

The Operation Galaxy team has re-released two e-fits as part of a fresh appeal.

Detective Inspector Julian Venner said: “Using advances in DNA technology, we are now able to forensically link all three attacks to the same suspect.

“These women were all brutally attacked, and we are absolutely determined to bring this man to justice and seek some closure for these three victims.”

The first rape took place in Whitchurch on October 27 in 1982 after an 18-year-old woman left the White Hart pub with a friend.

At a bus stop, the women noticed a white Ford Capri with a black roof driven by a man with dark hair.

After her friend caught the bus, the woman was walking along Winchester Street when at the junction with Test Road she noticed a man. She then turned into an alleyway, where she saw the same man.

The man put his hand over her mouth, pushed her over a low wall into a garden and raped her.

He was 5ft 7ins tall, with medium-blond, swept back hair and had a moustache and beard.

Then on December 23, 1982, an 18-year-old had just got off a bus in Dummer when she saw a large blue estate car, possibly a Peugeot, parked near a church.

She turned to see a man running towards her.

He grabbed her and put her inside his car, pulling her coat over her head.

After a short drive, she was taken out of the car, but on hearing a noise the man forced her back in and drove off.

They stopped again a little later when the assault took place.

He then drove her up a track before leaving her and speeding off.

The woman never saw her attacker, but told police he had rough hands and smelt strongly of farm animals and that his car had a dark PVC interior.

The third rape took place on June 15, 1984, after an 18-year-old woman had been out with a friend in Winchester.

They parted near Sleepers Hill around half a mile from the woman’s house.

As she walked down Dawn Gardens towards a footpath, she became aware of a man behind her.

He put his hand over her mouth and pulled her onto a driveway   where she was raped.

She noticed  her attacker had a brown Ford Cortina.

Det Ins Venner said: “Unfortunately, this suspect is not currently on the national DNA database.

“We are, therefore, appealing to the public to examine all three cases, and if they think they know who this individual is, or can provide any additional information, about the attacks, to contact us so that we can identify the man responsible for these horrific crimes.”

If you have information about the attacks, call the Operation Galaxy team on 101 or 08450 454545.
