Pupils take to the stage in national competition

frontA team of youngsters from a South Ham school will head to Southampton on Saturday to showcase their dancing talents.

More than 40 students from Year 3 to 6 at Park View Junior School on Pinkerton Road will take part in Rock Challenge UK.

The nationwide competition sees hundreds of schools from across the UK competing for the title.

The team of 42 dancers will be hoping to secure a place in next year’s premier division competition.

At the March 5 event, Park View will perform an eight-minute dance at the city’s Guildhall.  A panel of judges will mark their choreography, costumes, set design and concept.

The school’s head of Year 3, Fiona Carr believes her team have the winning formula.

She said: “I am already proud of every one of them. I just think that all the children are so talented here and don’t normally get a real chance to showcase it.

“I am quite nervous about the performance but we are now in our final week of preparing and things are really starting to look good.”

The school has chosen the 2012 Olympics as the theme for their dance. The routine starts with the Olympic torch in Greece before moving to London.  Students dressed as boxers, swimmers and runners from Team GB will strut their stuff to music like the Rocky theme tune.

Miss Carr said: “The message of our routine follows the values of the Olympics – equality, determination and respect.  Whoever auditioned for a part got a role and we have the students using sign language in the routine.”

And 10-year-old Chloe Keeping, from South Ham, said everybody was excited about getting up on stage.  She said: “It will be fun performing on stage, and I am excited to give it a go.

“Everybody will be a bit nervous but you forget about it when you get on stage. I feel proud of myself so far and I will do it well.”

The team will take on nine other junior schools from across Hampshire. Along with one other school from Hamble, they will be the only school never to have competed before.

Brighton Hill Community College, Aldworth Science College and Costello Technology College, will compete in secondary school heats.
