Quackers show to thrill visitors

Week34_Best_dressed_duckThe Best-Dressed Duck competition will be a central attraction at an annual village show held next weekend.

Aldermaston and Wasing will hold their 68th village show on Saturday, September 4 at The Old Mill Inn, Aldermaston.

The village first held the show during the second world war when in 1943 villagers held a competition to encourage everyone to 'dig for victory', and produce as much food as they could.

This year the show will host the famous Duck Derby, along with the best-dressed duck competition .

Peter Oldridge, Chairman of Aldermaston Parish Council, said: “The Best-Dressed Duck competition has proved a popular attraction, giving great scope for creativity in couture and also wit in finding really humorous names for a plastic duck.

Some really ingenious entries have included: Duck Vader, Count Duckula, Duck Whittington, Peking Duck and perhaps the quirkiest “Builder’s Quack” by Barbara Hurst- her duck’s baggy jeans were a masterpiece.”

The day will also feature a host of other attractions, including archery, bouncy castles, face painting, archery and falconry demonstrations.

The village will turn out hundreds of stalls showcasing handicrafts, cookery and vegetables displays.

The mill-stream will also turn bright yellow as hundreds of plastic ducks are raced in a series of ten heats, culminating in a final where the eventual winner will take home the coveted Duck Derby plate.

Cllr David Shirt, said: “It is probably the event of the year in the village, everyone comes together for the show.”

Public admission is from 2pm on the day. For more information, visit http://www.awshow.org.uk/
