Residents give Popley thumbs up

A newly Formed residents' association is taking taking on the task of making the Popley Poets area a better place to live.

The new Shakespeare Community Residents’ Association was officially launched at a meeting this month and is encouraging other residents to get involved.

The move comes after a community meeting in March led by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's community development officer Stephen Bate, working in partnership with Sentinel, showed strong support for setting up a residents’ association, with 12 volunteers agreeing to work together to set it up.

Working together with Peace of Mind Care, a community charitable trust, the group is planning community plans such setting up a new community café and arranging events to raise funds for local activities.

Chair of the newly formed committee Brian Weatherall said: “It is great that so many people who attended the meeting were passionate about doing something for our area and that energy is now being channeled into taking action for the local community. We are urging other residents to join us and get involved.”

The council’s Head of Neighbourhood Development Tim Boschi said: “This group is a fine example of what can be achieved if local residents volunteer to join together and work with our community development team to help make a difference where they live.”
