Firefighters from Basingstoke were called to tackle a roof blaze at a house in Basingstoke.
Three fire tenders from Basingstoke were dispatched to Munnings Close at 9.30am on Thursday last week.
A man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke-inhalation.
Smoke damage was caused to the first floor and loft.
Hampshire Fire And Rescue Service was called by the homeowner, who was altered by a smoke detector.
Six firefighters wearing breathing gear tackled the blaze using two hose reels and used a high-pressure fan to clear the smoke from the house.
Station manager Dave Graham said the incident could have been much worse without a working smoke detector.
He said: “Once again, we are reminded of the importance of working smoke detectors giving an early warning to a fire in the home. The entire building could have been much more severely damaged had we not arrived earlier. Regrettably, the occupant attempted to tackle the blaze and suffered smoke-inhalation.
“For this reason, we always advise people to shut all doors and windows when safe to do so to minimise the spread and damage of the fire and to exit the property as soon as possible.”
