School science boost for Ashford Hill

Week_53_3_of_6A community outreach scheme run by AWE Aldermaston has been recognised by education watchdog Ofsted.

Scientists and engineers at the nuclear weapons base have been tasked with mentoring four Year 5 pupils at Ashford Hill Primary School since September.

Ofsted Inspector Keith Sadler, who graded the Ashford Hill Road school as satisfactory, said the scheme aided talented pupils. In his report published earlier this month, he said: “Provision for more-able pupils has improved since the previous inspection and supports their good progress.

“Weekly visits from scientists and engineers from the nearby Atomic Weapons Establishment, as well as weekly visits to the nearby secondary school for mathematics lessons, enhance these pupils learning.”

The headteacher of the 135-pupil mixed school, Helen Borley, said: “The children are enjoying these sessions and gaining a great deal from the experience.”
