A loving monument to the memories of Jake Burden and Lee Robinson will soon be a reality, as the refurbishment of Tadley Skate Park is now underway.
Work started on Monday March 29 and is set for completion in the next couple of months. The £90,000 raised by the Jake ‘n’ Lee Tadley Youth Fund for the project is a testament to the generous spirit of all those who knew and loved Jake and Lee, who died in August 07.
Caroline Hall, committee member and trustee of the charity, said: “We are so proud of what the people of Tadley have done to help us achieve our goal.”
Just weeks after Jake (18) and Lee (16) were killed in a car accident on the Tadley to Basingstoke Road, friends and family of the two boys found hope in the tragedy by raising money for the fund at Tadley’s annual treacle fair.
The continued determination of the Tadley community was rewarded in November 2009 when the fund won £50,000 from the National Lottery People's Millions. This windfall, along with much-needed support from Nick Hicks of the county council's Basingstoke Youth Team, has allowed the charity to hit its target early.
Donna Fowler, chairman, said: “I’m relieved. I knew we would make it but I didn’t think it would be quite so quick. It’s all taking shape now, and it’s great to see the parents [of Jake and Lee] excited.”
Buoyed by their success, the charity is asking the community for ideas on future projects, to keep the memories of Jake and Lee alive.
