The Safe Hub, which will be based in the basement of the United Reform Church in London Street, is being run by Basingstoke Street Pastors. Revellers who have had too much to drink, are unwell or are vulnerable can visit the facility to get some aid.
The pastors’ new venture is being supported by Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital’s A&E department, the borough council, South Central Ambulance Service and Hampshire police.
Malcolm Murray, co-ordinator for Basingstoke Street Pastors, said: “The Safe Hub was welcomed by everyone in the town following a three-week trial in January. The response was very positive with people being grateful that there were volunteers looking out for them. We hope to ensure the well-being of the town and reduce the need for unnecessary ambulances being called out.”
Chief Inspector Andy Bottomley, district commander Basingstoke, suggested the idea of a safe area following other scheme in the UK including Portsmouth’s Safe Place and Southampton’s Ice Bus.
Ch Insp Bottomley told the Observer: “We have been working hard to reduce town centre violence and ensure the well being of those on a night out. The creation of the Safe Hub to help people is a reflection of that hard work and the partnership working together to try and make a difference.”
The Basingstoke Street Pastors are a group of trained church volunteers, who have been providing practical support to late night revellers on Fridays and Saturdays since July 2008. Members congregate outside the town centre bars and clubs until closing time in high-visibility jackets and caps, offering support to those they meet.
Malcolm Murray said: “The street pastors work in teams of three or four handing out lollipops and flip flops for women who may be suffering in high heels. We are on hand to diffuse minor incidents, calming down any potential situations that could escalate into more serious problems.”
Jacqui Mundy, the lead street pastor for the Safe Hub, said: “We will open every Friday and Saturday evening from 10pm until 3am. If you need help in the town, just ask the door staff to direct you or contact at the Safe Hub via their radios and we will come to you. Look out for the Safe Hub signs.”
