Strike action by teachers causes disruption

Strike action by teachers across the county led to widespread disruption last week.

Up to 15 schools across Basingstoke borough and Hart district closed their doors after teachers walked out in a pensions dispute on June 30.

Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) set up pickets over a row with the Government about proposed changes to pensions.

Up to 92 per cent of NUT members across the country balloted agreed to strike after the Government announced plans to increase teachers’ pensions contributions by 50 per cent.

NUT leader Christine Blower said the proposals will unfairly impact members.

She said: “They are simply imposing draconian changes that will see teachers paying more, working longer and getting less with no evidence to back up these claims.”

But parents were left with a last minute scramble to make arrangements as children were told to stay at home.

Kevin Allwright, from Hatch Warren has two children at Hatch Warren Infant School, which was partially closed. He said: “I believe that teachers do a very worthwhile job. But I don’t think what they are doing is the best way to go about it.”
