Torched site to rise from the ashes

Week36_Gershwin_Road_Fire_Work to rebuild an old people’s home destroyed in an arson attack during its construction could get under way at the end of this month.

The Saxon Weald Extra Care scheme in Gershwin Road, Brighton Hill, was swept by fire two months ago.

The scheme was for 64 flats for people aged over 60 who need assisted care.

More than 100 firefighters were called to the fire on the site of  the former Beech Down Primary School on Friday September 10.

Firefighters fought for more than 15 hours to bring the blaze under control.

Up to 40 people were evacuated from Gershwin Road and Lehar close.

Four youths aged 12 to 15 were arrested on suspicion of causing the blaze. They were released without charge, but the investigation is continuing.

Work on the old people’s home started in September 2009 and had been scheduled to open in June 2011.

Contractor Castleoak is in talks with its insurers to finalise the cost of the re-build.

Castleoak is working with the police and fire service to step up security at the site.

David Standfast, Saxon Weald’s chief executive, said: “I am delighted that everyone involved in the project has acted quickly and decisively to get it back on track as quickly as possible.”

The re-build should see the 64 flats get back on track as well as an on-site old persons’ centre.”

Hampshire county councillor Felicity Hindson said: “It is excellent news that work will start again on the Extra Care housing site at Brighton Hill after it suffered such a disappointing setback.”

The development is being built in partnership with Hampshire County Council, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and the Department of Health (DoH).

The scheme was costed at £11.2m, with the DoH providing £3.1m and Hampshire County Council allocating  £600,000.

Cllr Cathy Osselton, borough council cabinet member for housing, health and culture, said: “I am very pleased that building is to recommence and I look forward to the fruition of the project.

“Extra care provides not just secure housing for elderly people with support when they need it but also offers a range of services and facilities to improve their quality of life.”

A date of completion has yet to be announced.
