Volunteers needed for borough cause

A popular social club for elderly Basingstoke residents could be forced to close unless volunteer helpers come forward.

The Popley Activity Centre, based at Abbey Court, is a much-loved initiative attended by more than 20 of the town’s elder statesmen each week. Age Concern has activity centres across the borough including Brighton Hill, Oakridge, South Ham and more.

And Age Concern is appealing for volunteers to help keep the Popley service alive.

Beverley Jones, Community Services Manager, said: “Unless some more volunteer helpers come forward, Age Concern may be forced to close its Popley Activity Centre. The social club for elderly residents was officially opened by the Mayor, Councillor Rose Wellman in January 2002. Each week we welcome 20 older people to Abbey Court who join residents for games, quizzes and other activities suitable for older people.”

Popley councillor Jane Frankum told the Observer how important the service is to the community. “It’s absolutely vital,” she said. “Sometimes it is the only occasion some of these people leave the house. Imagine being so isolated that you don’t see people not just from day to day but from week to week.

“That is why this service is so crucial. It sounds dramatic but it gives them a reason to get up in the morning, to get dressed and have a routine. The residents get to meet new people – it really is fantastic.

“If the service does have to close it will be a great sadness to so many people so I hope plenty of volunteers come forward to help keep it alive. There is so much you can achieve as a volunteer. Even one hour a week would make a difference to many people.

“It’s very likely there be cuts in all sorts of services so paid staff will be at a premium, this means volunteers will be all the more crucial. This case has just highlighted the need for more volunteers.”

Age Concern needs volunteers each Wednesday from 9.30am to 1pm.
